ADT’s History
ADT’s First President, Col. Robert C. Clowry, served as President of Western Union and ADT from 1902 – 1910.
Over one hundred and twenty years ago, speedy ADT (formerly American District Telegraph) messengers could report a fire in three minutes flat. Today, ADT’s fastest detection system works in less than a second. From humble beginnings to world-wide operations, ADT has become a leader in providing new technology for the protection of people and their property, moving the early telegraph signal to today’s sophisticated “state-of-the-art” electronic equipment.
ADT Security Services is a wholly owned subsidiary of Tyco International Ltd. Tyco International, through its divisions and operating subsidiaries, is the world’s largest manufacturer and installer of fire and safety systems and has strong leadership positions in disposable medical products, packaging materials, flow control products, electrical and electronic components and underwater telecommunication systems. The company operates in more that 50 countries around the world and has annual revenues in excess of $11 billion. The two companies combined result in the largest fire and security business in the world. ADT Security Services serves over 2 million industrial, commercial and residential customers. It is the largest single provider of electronic security services in North American and the United Kingdom, and serves the majority of the Fortune 500 Companies.
Delivering “peace of mind” to customers in the home and the workplace, ADT designs, installs, monitors and services security systems that match the client’s specific needs. But it is not technology alone that has made ADT the premier supplier of security systems for business, industry and private homes, it is commitment – a constant commitment to product innovation and customer service – to deliver the best.
ADT’s earliest roots can be traced to several Canadian companies. B.C. District Telegraph and Delivery Company Limited was incorporated in 1891, obtaining a 50 year franchise for the operation of district telegraph systems in Vancouver and Victoria. Initially, the company provided the transmission and delivery of telegrams to its customers. This service soon evolved into the provision of signal boxes for watchmen and guards, by which the individual could signal his well being at specific intervals to the central office. Call boxes were also provided to customers. By operating these simple electromechanical telegraphic call boxes on their premises, subscribers could have a messenger at their door within minutes – usually to take a message for telegraphic transmission but also at times to perform other errands or summon assistance.
As the company grew, B.C. Telegraph and Delivery expanded into new areas, and in 1908 the first complete premises were installed with the company’s fire alarm system. Thus, the company’s first comprehensive burglar alarm system was inaugurated.
After World War I, B.C. Telegraph and Delivery extended its services to many areas throughout the province. By the 1950’s, with the popularity of the telephone, expansion in the area of telephone line facilities occurred and the name was shortened to B.C. District Telegraph Company Limited.
The eastern roots of ADT began in 1905 when S.B. McMichael founded Dominion Messenger & Signal Company Limited in Toronto. Engaged in similar activities as B.C. District Telegraph, Dominion Messenger soon began to expand, In 1906 it opened an office in Hamilton, in Winnipeg in 1909, and an Ottawa location in 1914. In 1918, Dominion Messenger purchased Holmes Protection of Canada. Founded in 1897 in Toronto to provide messenger services, Holmes Protection had been the first company to offer burglar alarm services in Canada.
Becoming Dominion Electric Protection Company in 1924, the all-Canadian enterprise grew to become Canada’s largest full-service alarm company, with a manufacturing plant in Montreal and central stations across the country. In cities and towns where a central station was not located, local or self-contained systems were connected to the fire or police department. The company manufactured installed and operated electric signaling systems for the protection of property from fire and theft, and included watchman patrol and manual fire alarms, automatic fire alarm systems, automatic sprinkler supervisory systems, and burglar alarm systems.
During World War II, part of Dominion Electric’s factory located in Montreal was converted to the manufacture of gyrocompasses for “Mosquito” low level bombers. So well manufactured, inquiries continued to be received at ADT Canada’s corporate headquarters in Toronto as late as 1994, regarding repairs and parts. In recognition of its important contribution to the war effort, the company received a “Meritorious War Service” award in 1943.
In 1956, controlling interests were obtained in Dominion Electric Protection Company, British Columbia District Telegraph Company, and Alberta Alarm Company by ADT Security Systems. ADT itself had been incorporated in 1901 when Western Union consolidated 57 district telegraph companies in the United States under the umbrella of its oldest member, American District Telegraph, founded in 1874. Through its emphasis on technical research efforts, ADT grew rapidly in the areas of burglar, holdup and fire alarm systems.
With its entrance into the Canadian market, ADT became the primary provider of security systems in Canada. Its Canadian branches, sharing in ADT’s technology, were able to offer business and industry in Canada the same high quality systems and services as ADT did in the United States. Becoming an independent corporate entity in 1961, ADT Canada has continued to expand through dynamic sales and marketing efforts as well as several strategic acquisitions. Embarking aggressively on a program to pursue the residential market in the 1970’s, ADT Canada is now the largest commercial and residential security firm in Canada.
ADT also actively participates in programs designed to reduce crime and drug abuse. It is a strong supporter of the National Crime Prevention Council and was instrumental in the development and implementation of a program to respond to increasing conjugal violence. Initiated at ADT’s Winnipeg office in cooperation with the local police, telephone company and social service agencies, the DVERS program provides a short-term protective signaling security system for women who are in high-risk situations of spousal violence. Its success has encouraged other cities across North America to implement the program
Today, ADT maintains its leadership position in the security industry by ensuring customer satisfaction through its commitment to quality service and technical innovation. All its product lines are constantly updated with state-of-the-art components that provide better, more efficient service to its customers.
Dedicated to protecting customers and their property through sophisticated yet easy-to-use electronic security systems, it is this vital commitment to service that ensures ADT Canada’s leading role in the security industry, now and in the future.
